Ultrasonography is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows our vets to examine your pet’s internal organs in real time. Using sound waves, an ultrasound provides detailed images of the heart, liver, kidneys, bladder and reproductive system, without the need for surgery. It is commonly used to diagnose conditions such as heart disease, organ abnormalities, pregnancies and internal masses. Ultrasound is a painless procedure that helps our team detect issues early, leading to faster treatment and better outcomes.
Extensive training is required in order to correctly use this equipment and interpret these images. Ultrasound scans are most useful for looking at soft or fluid-filled organs; like the liver, kidney, bladder and heart. It is less effective for examining bones or air-filled organs like the lungs. If your pet requires an ultrasound, our team is here to provide expert care and accurate diagnostics.
Ultrasound procedures are generally painless, however, some pets may feel slight discomfort from the pressure of the probe. If needed, sedation can help keep them relaxed – this is especially good for nervous pets. Please note that when we book an ultrasound procedure with your pet, we generally ask that you leave them with us for the day, unless it’s an emergency, in which case the scan is performed immediately. Where possible pets should be brought in with an empty stomach, as sedation may be needed to ensure a clear and accurate scan. The area being examined will be shaved, so your pet may look a little different when they return home. A water-based gel is applied to the skin before using the ultrasound probe. Once the scan is complete, your pet will be discharged. Results may take 24–48 hours.
